2011 Australia Post Stawell Gift

The countdown to the 2011 Australia Post Stawell Gift is now on.

To 'Experience the Gift' is a must for any sports fan. The history and romance of the Australia Post Stawell Gift is entrenched in Australian folklore, ensuring its status as an icon of Australian sport.

The Australia Post Stawell Gift has been held in all but four years since 1878, and has developed into Australia's, and notably one of the world's, most famous and prestigious foot races.

Image The Australia Post Stawell Gift is a professional athletics meeting incorporating 60+ events, with athletes running off handicaps. It is a true carnival atmosphere with plenty of action off the track for all the family, including a betting ring, fashion parade, live music and children's entertainment.

The 130th edition of the event will see a change to the typical three-day timetabling/scheduling of the event, owing to Anzac Day falling on Easter Monday.

The Stawell Athletic Club, out of respect for annual Anzac Day activities and servicemen both past and present has decided to extend the 2011 carnival to four days with the running of the Stawell Gift final to take place on Easter Tuesday, instead of Easter Monday (the traditional day of the Gift final).

The fall of Anzac Day during the 2011 carnival, provides the club with the perfect opportunity to recognise the achievements of ordinary Australians who served their country and forged a name for themselves both on and off the track at Central Park.

The club is presently working on a timetable of events in conjunction with the VAL that accommodates the interests of competing athletes, spectators, event sponsors and volunteers in an effort to maximise attendance and participation. Further information about the event timetable and ticket prices will be made available, once finalised.

In the 2010 edition of the event, Canberra sprinter Tom Burbidge won in emphatic style at Central Park. Starting off 8.75m, the 25-year-old dominated the race from the gun, quickly gathering in his frontmarkers for an impressive victory in 12.01 seconds.

A mid-race challenge came from South Australian Dale Woodhams (7.25m), but Burbidge's victory was never really in doubt with Woodhams and Douglas Greenough (9.75m) rounding up the minor places.

History and tradition - the Gift has it all and another chapter will be written on the 2011 Easter weekend in the 130th running of the Australia Post Stawell Gift.
