Wiltshire and Cowley the early favourites at $3

The 131st edition of the iconic Australia Post Stawell Gift commences today at Central Park, Stawell. 145 athletes will contest the heats of the 120m Gift ahead of the semi-finals and final on Easter Monday.

With $40,000 on the line for the winner, athletes from across Australia and as far as the Caribbean have gathered to compete.

 

The favourites prior to the heats are Ballarat’s Matthew Wiltshire, running off an 8 metre handicap, and ACT’s Jaryd Cowley, off 9.25m. Both are $3 in the betting ring, with 2009 Gift winner Aaron Stubbs, running off 4.25m, at $4.

Among the backmarkers Jamaica’s 4x100m relay world record holder Michael Frater starts from scratch, and 2003  world 100m champion from St Kitts & Nevis, Kim Collins, from 1 metre. Both are at $8 with the bookmakers and are expected to be competitive.

The heats of the Australia Post Stawell Gift commence today at 1pm. The semi-finals and final will be held on Easter Monday.
