The Stawell Athletic Club celebrated the 125th Stawell Gift in 2006 with a walk down memory lane, re-kindling the collective menmories and excitement generated by previous Stawell Gift Carnivals. The question was posed – what are the top 125 moments that have captured the hearts of sports fans and etched their place in the history of this unique event?

Importantly, what is the greatest ever moment of the Stawell Gift carnival?

Public nominations were submitted from around Australia and were collated by a special committee of the Stawell Athletic Club headed by Australia’s leading athletics statistician and the world-wide president of the Association of Track and Field Statisticians, Paul Jenes. Stawell Athletic Club historian and current Gift starter Murray MacPherson and professional running legend John Toleman also ranked the top moments from Australia’s richest and most famous footrace.

The 125 Greatest Ever Stawell Gift moments are not limited to the Gift itself - athletic achievement, historical significance, entertainment value, and controversy were all factors in determining the great moments.

The 125 Greatest Ever Stawell Gift moments were released progressively in the lead up to the 2006 Australia Post Stawell Gift. The top ten moments were unveiled at ‘Talking Stawell… a 125th Celebratory Function’ held on the Saturday night in Stawell. The full list can be viewed here.
