Murray Goodwin took out the 134th running of the Woolworths Stawell Gift final in the time of 12.10 seconds.
Goodwin sat down with his coach Brett Robinson twelve months ago and set the Gift as a challenge and mapped out a plan.
“We set this as a challenge and slotted down a plan”, Goodwin said.
“I was in the semi-final of the Gift in 2014 and it was a mutual decision we made 3 to 4 weeks after to make this the focus.”
After an uninterrupted season and routine training, Goodwin came into today’s final with confidence.
“The Gift is certainly one of those races where people can come out of anywhere and challenge you, and a big part of the success is really through routine preparation,” he said.
The 23-year-old teacher from Queensland was the one to best handle the wet heavy conditions.
“We were sort of lucky, we had a really heavy week of rain before we came down. It gave me the peace of mind that I was prepared for all conditions.”
Frontmarker and pre-race favourite Luke Houlihan may have cost himself the race with a uncharacteristic stumble out of the blocks. Although disappointed to finish second, he was gracious in defeat and was the first to congratulate Goodwin.
