Q&A with Bree Masters

Date: 13th April 2019

23-year-old Bree Masters is from Broadbeach, Queensland and is one of the highly favoured entries in the 120m Strickland Family Women’s Gift at Stawell next weekend.  Coached by Ryan Hoffman, the former World Beach Sprint Champion is the current Australian Beach Sprints champion after narrowly edging out Stawell Gift reigning champ Elizabeth Forsyth at the Aussies last month.  We asked Bree a few questions ahead of her first visit to Stawell.

Are you looking forward to the Stawell Gift?

Yes! I have never raced at the Stawell Gift before, so I am very excited to give it a go and have fun, as I have always heard great things about the Stawell Gift and how amazing the atmosphere is.

What was it like winning the Keilor Gift and did that give you a taste of professional running?

Winning Keilor was so great and unexpected! It was my first Gift race, which I had entered to try something new away from the beach and to see what gift racing was like. I had so much fun and I really enjoyed Keilor and was very honoured to take the win.

Apart from the surface what is different about pro running compared to beach running?

Beach running and pro running is so different! Beach running requires a whole different running technique to get across the 90m of soft sand and over the finish line. Pro racing is that little bit longer and the handicaps also give it a different feel to what I am used to on the beach.

Who do you think will be your main competitors at Stawell?

I am quite new to pro running and only ran my first ever gift at Keilor, so I don’t know many of the other athletes yet, however I know it is going to be a super tough field of really strong female sprinters.

Tell us a bit more about yourself, your hobbies?

I spend my weeks training hard for Surf Life Saving in the hope of achieving all my goals within the sport. As well as training for Surf Life Saving, I work a part time job in marketing and juggle full time study at University, where I am completing a Bachelor of Communications (Business) majoring in Marketing and Public Relations at Bond University on the Gold Coast. When I find some down time, I love to spend time with my family and friends at the beach in the sun!
