December 8, 2020 – Australia’s richest footrace, the Powercor Stawell Gift, will be broadcast live and free on the Seven Network each Easter Monday through to 2024 under an extended broadcast partnership, announced today.
The Powercor Stawell Gift Carnival, headlined by the 120m Powercor Stawell Gift, is an icon of Australian sport, held each Easter long weekend. Following the cancellation of the 2020 Stawell Gift due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 139th running of the Powercor Stawell Gift will take place at Central Park, Stawell, from April 3-5, 2021.
The three-day carnival attracts more than 700 runners from across Australia, with the Powercor Stawell Gift and Strickland Family Women’s Gift competitors vying for $60,000 in prizemoney on offer for both events, which feature equal prize money. Previous competitors have included Sydney 2000 Gold Medallist, Cathy Freeman and renowned Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell. The defending champions are Melbourne’s Dhruv Rodrigues Chico and Lexi Loizou.
Thousands of spectators flock to Central Park annually to witness the incredible on-track action and array of off-field activities, including fashions on the field on Easter Saturday and the incredible Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. Tickets for the 2021 carnival will go on sale in February.
The Powercor Stawell Gift has been broadcast live and free on Seven since 2015. The two-and-a-half-hour program includes the semi finals and finals of the Powercor Stawell Gift and Strickland Family Women’s Gift along with featured invitational races and finals. The program leads into the Easter Monday AFL blockbuster at the MCG.
Stephanie Spence, Chair of Stawell Gift Event Management, welcomed the announcement of the partnership extension.
“We’re thrilled to be able to continue to showcase Australia’s premier annual athletics event on Australia’s #1 network. The Powercor Stawell Gift is part of Australian sporting folklore and we’re excited that we can call the Seven Network home for another four editions of the Carnival.”
On November 27, the Victorian Government and Stawell Gift Event Management announced a new five-year naming rights partnership with Powercor, Australia’s leading rural electricity distribution network supplying power to almost one million households and businesses in western Victoria including Melbourne’s western suburbs. The 2021 Powercor Stawell Gift will take place at Central Park, Stawell from Saturday April 3 to Monday April 5, 2021.
